Mr. Joe Louis Hayes, 80, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2017.
Mr. Hayes was born in Boxelder, Texas to the late Norman and Gladys Dillard Hayes. He was reared in Annona, Texas where he attended school.
In the late 1950’s, Mr. Hayes moved to Amarillo where as a young man he worked as an Auto Mechanic/Technician. He met and later married the late Eva Mae Taylor Hayes and for 35 years reared a family of nine children of which three preceded him in death (Glenn C. Hayes, Dennis L. Hayes and Vickie J. Moore). During this time, he enjoyed nearly a 30-year tenure with Coca-Cola Bottling Company. He served as a Fork-Lift Operator for a number of years. After obtaining a Commercial Drivers License, he was a Transport Driver until his retirement from the company. Never one to sit still, he soon found himself working again as a Bus Driver for Amarillo City Transit. Ever devoted to his family, Mr. Hayes left Amarillo City Transit and returned to Annona, Texas to assist with caring for his mother until her passing. After returning to Amarillo, he re-employed with Amarillo City Transit where he met Eve Barrett. Mr. Hayes and Ms. Barrett married in June 2002 and shared a loving home with their daughter and lots of Papa Joe time with youngest grandchildren Jacoby, Jack and Harper until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his three children and two brothers, Charlie D. Hayes and Joe W. Hayes.
Cherishing his memory of the home, are his wife Eve Hayes, daughters Isabel Hayes and Judith Barrett and son, Marshall Barrett. His children, daughters Tracy Y. Hayes, Michelle Taylor, Danielle Morris and Debra Williams, all of DeSoto, Texas and Janice Steptoe of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, sons, Bobby Steptoe of Forest Hill, Texas and Edwin Wilson of Houston, Texas, sisters, Mrs. Ruby Scales of Annona, Texas, Mrs. Gladys Roberts of Amarillo, Texas; brothers Johnny Hayes (Evyette) and Sam Hayes (Marcia) both of Rochester, New York and sister-in-law Mrs. Eleanor Hayes of San Diego, California, 27 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
